And once you get this recipe down, an entire world of weed-inspired food (along with bragging rights at parties) awaits.
Make Your Own Cannabutter In 4 Simple Steps
The Ingredients:
There are really only two ingredients here — butter and cannabis. But how much of each? Well, that just depends on how much you want to make. You’ll get the best results by mixing them at a roughly 4:1 ratio. In other words, you’ll want around 1 ounce of cannabis bud for every 4 ounces of butter. Obviously, the better quality the butter and cannabis, the better quality the cannabutter.
You’ll also need:
- Some cheesecloth
- A Food processor
- A large pot
- A large jar
- A funnel. Aside from cannabis, the vast majority of these items should be easy to find nearly anywhere!
The Method:
Step 1.
The first thing you need to do is decarb your cannabis (otherwise it won’t get you high). Some recipes say that you can do this while infusing it into the butter, but this can lead to weaker results.
To decarb your buds, preheat your oven to 245ºF and place your cannabis on a non-stick tray covered with parchment paper. Then, place the cannabis into the oven for around 30-40 minutes. Check on your buds every 10 minutes and gently turn them to ensure that their entire surface area is heated.
Step 2.
Grind your decarbed buds coarsely. You can do this with a hand grinder, but it’s much faster and more consistent if you use a food processor. A couple of pulses should do the job.
Step 3.
Fill the pot with water and bring it to a boil. Add the butter and lower the heat to a low simmer, gently melting the butter. Add water as needed to prevent the butter from scorching. As the butter melts, add your cannabis, ensuring that it’s distributed evenly. Maintain a low heat and simmer the mixture for 2 or 3 hours. Ensure that it doesn’t come to a full boil and stirring regularly.
Step 4.
Take your butter off the heat and allow it to cool. When the mixture is around room temperature, set down a jar large enough to hold it. Place the cheesecloth over the jar and line your funnel up with it. Carefully pour the butter into the funnel and allow the butter to strain through the cloth, making sure that none of the bitter plant material will be present in the final product.
When it is fully strained, place the jar in the fridge and allow it to cool for a day. Once this is done, your cannabutter will be ready to go! Bon appetit!
